COURSE
DESCRIPTION:
Psychiatric
Technicians are part of the mental health care team in California. They
provide care for mentally ill, emotionally disturbed and mentally retarded
individuals following physician instructions and hospital policies. They
monitor patientsí physical and emotional well being and report to
medical staff.
Psychiatric Technicians may participate in treatment and
rehabilitation programs implementing specific therapeutic techniques.
They assist with personal hygiene and administer medications, and
may have direct responsibility in the application of interpersonal and
technical skills in the observation and recognition of symptoms and
reactions of patients.

GOALS:
Psychiatric
technician theory and clinical content covers components of: Fundamentals
of Nursing, Communicable Diseases, Basic Medical Surgical Nursing, Basic
Anatomy and Physiology, Pharmacology, Therapeutic Nutrition, Personality
and Communication, Normal Growth and Development, Developmental
Disabilities, Psychiatric Disorders, Geriatric Nursing and
Leadership/Supervision. Clinical practice settings include on-campus
skill center, extended care and acute hospitals, child development
centers, developmental centers and mental hospitals.
